This Sputnik shaped cheese and pineapple design is a take on a classic retro party snack.

Inspired by the Sputnik light which was popular in home decor during the 60s, this is a super easy idea for a 60s-themed party.

LET’S MAKE IT

INGREDIENTS

1 Orange
1 Block of Mild Cheddar Cheese
1 Pineapple (Fresh or tinned)

Yield: 12
Each Skewer: 2 pieces of cheese and 1 piece of pineapple

I had plenty of ingredients left over after making the initial 12 skewers so more can be added to the orange if required.

STEP 1

ORANGE PREP

Lightly brush edible glue over the entire orange.

Tip – use a small amount of edible glue on the brush otherwise the glue will drip from the orange.

Repeat this step until the orange is fully covered.

STEP 2

Place a sheet of gold leaf on top of the orange and gently pat down so it sticks to the orange.

Place more sheets of gold leaf on the orange until completely covered.

Set the orange aside.

STEP 3

Take the cheese and cut into 2cm squares. I found that any squares smaller than this end up completely breaking when you skewer them.

Once you have cut the required amount set aside.

STEP 4

If you are using fresh pineapple, cut the pineapple into rings.

Take the pineapple rings and cut into 2cm pieces. Cut as many pieces as required.

STEP 5

Take a skewer, pierce a square of cheese, and twist to 3 quarters down the skewer.

Twisting the cheese rather than pushing helps to stop the cheese from fully splitting.

STEP 6

Add a piece of pineapple then another square of cheese.

Ensure you leave enough space at the end of the skewer so you can pierce into the orange.

STEP 7

Repeat steps 5 and 6 until you have the amount of skewers you want.

STEP 8

Pierce each skewer into the orange until you have covered the whole orange.

The orange covered with skewers should stand independently on a plate or surface.

And there you have it, a Sputnik Cheese and Pineapple party snack.
